Admission to the Doctoral School of Hungarian Studies
Admission Dates (the specific dates of the exams depend on the pending university admission quotas):
July 2026
September 2026 (only if vacancies remain after the summer admission session)
The number and type of positions recommended by individual supervisors (full-time scholarship positions, full-time non-scholarship positions, or tuition-paying positions) will be determined during May and June, subject to ministerial and university decisions. The final number of available spots will be published by mid-June at the latest.
For the autumn session, applications can only be submitted for places that remained vacant after the summer session. Should vacancies remain at other doctoral schools within BBU (Babeș-Bolyai University) following the summer and autumn sessions, the doctoral school may request their redistribution for its own candidates (on the waiting list).
Citizens of all EU member states may apply for the positions advertised by the doctoral school under equal conditions. Detailed administrative information regarding the admission process (available in Romanian, Hungarian, and English) can be found on the website of the Doctoral Schools' Secretariat: https://doctorat.ubbcluj.ro/en/admission/
The Admission Exam for the Doctoral School of Hungarology:
Upon registration, candidates must submit a professional CV and a 3-5 page research plan in Hungarian, related to the research field of their chosen supervisor. These documents should be sent to the Doctoral School Secretariat (at hungarologia.lett@ubbcluj.ro) and to the chosen supervisor. The plan must include: a detailed professional explanation and justification of the research problem, the primary hypotheses, a literature review demonstrating prior expertise in the subject, and basic information regarding the practical organization of the research (e.g., a timeline for the duration of the doctoral studies). The oral exam consists of the presentation of the research plan and a Q&A session.
A written exam based on the literature of the research topic announced by the chosen supervisor.
The Admission Committee evaluates the candidate's prior professional achievements, the quality and feasibility of the research plan, and—through the written exam—the candidate's expertise in the given field. Each of these components accounts for one-third of the total admission score:
Prior professional performance (1/3)
Research plan and responses to the committee's questions (1/3)
Written exam (1/3)
Practical questions regarding admission are answered by the Doctoral School Secretariat (hungarologia.lett@ubbcluj.ro) or in person during office hours. We also recommend the doctoral school’s information brochure, which provides an overview of the preparation process as well as the entire doctoral program. This resource is designed to help candidates carefully consider their next steps.
